Reciprocating saws are an indispensible part of removing material. This is especially true in tight spaces. With that in mind, Alfa Tools leadership tasked the team with expanding our line of recip blades to give end users even greater cutting power. The result?
Â
We've added two new recip blades to our line up. One is six inches in length and one is nine inches in length. Both new blades have 18 teeth per inch.Â
Â
In reciprocating saw blades, 18 TPI (teeth per inch) is generally considered a fine-tooth blade configuration. The biggest advantageis cleaner, smoother cutting in thinner materials and metal applications.Â
Â
Here's where 18 TPI shines:
Â
1. Better for Thin Metal
At all times, an 18 TPI blade keeps more teeth engaged in the material. WIth 18 TPI, at least 3 teeth are always engaged in the material. Thin materials can "grab" or strip teeth if the pitch is too coarse.Â
Our new 18 TPI blades are ideal for:
- Thin wall conduit
- EMT
- Sheet metal
- Thin tubing
- Metal studs
- Automotive metal
- Light gauge stainless
2. Smoother, Cleaner Cuts
More teeth means:
- Less vibration
- Less tearing
- Reduced burrs
- Better finish quality
That’s important in:
- Finish/demo work
- HVAC
- Electrical installs
- Automotive repair
- Fabrication
A 10 TPI blade cuts faster, but an 18 TPI blade cuts cleaner. This is where knowing the job and what you want to accomplish matters.Â
3. Reduced Tooth Stripping
Fine teeth distribute cutting load across more cutting points.
Benefits:
- Less aggressive bite
- Lower chance of snagging
- Better control
- Longer life in thin metals
Coarse blades often destroy themselves quickly in thin steel because individual teeth hit too hard.
4. Better Control in Precision Cuts
18 TPI blades feel more controlled and less violent during cutting.
That matters when:
- Working overhead
- Cutting installed pipe
- Cutting close to finished surfaces
- Performing plunge or flush cuts
Tradeoff: Slower Cutting in Thick Material
The downside:
- 18 TPI removes less material per stroke
- Slower in wood
- Slower in thick steel
- Can clog in soft materials
It is essential to choose the correct blade and teeth per in when selecting the right blade for the job. Customers rely on Alfa Tools to get the job done right.Â
